Providing about a million customers with electricity and more than 400,000 customers with natural gas, Alliant Energy is a Fortune 1000 company. Alliant Energy has been doing business for over a century. To cover the needs of the business, they deliver energy directly to consumers by means of company-owned mains and lines and generates more than 31 million megawatt hours of electricity annually in its facilities. Alliant Energy operates utilities as well as non-regulated businesses to keep up with the new regulations. It does this by operating several companies under the umbrella of its corporation.

Alliant Energy is an example of the modern energy corporation. Recently, it changed its business focus from acquisition and development of new generating facilities to managing its current assets. It also manages investments in environmental engineering and site remediation, transportation, and construction management services for wind farms.

While energy businesses of the size of Alliant Energy also diversify in a similar manner, the specific types of investments they make are unique to each company. Among the companies under its corporate umbrella is the Alliant Energy Corporate Services, Inc. that provides support services to the energy arm of the company.

These services include the normal front office types of things like strategy, risk management, performance improvement, accounting and finance. They also keep the services of fuel procurement, supply chain, communications, legal, internal audit, corporate governance, information technology and human resources in-house. Today’s energy companies keep up with the changing business environment by evolving and changing. The model of Alliant Energy is a good example of this.
