We all reminisce of the good-old days. Way back when, prior to the permits and driver's licenses. Things we simple back then. It was impossible to run a stop sign, get a speeding ticket, or put your father's car in the ditch while fish-tailing down a gravel road. Not that I ever did any of those things. But, I knew plenty of peers who did when they acquired their driver's license. Come to think of it, those days pre-driver's license weren't all that stellar. A big wheel can only take you so far. Not to worry; drivers education came soon enough. Before I knew what hit me, I was cruising around in a compact four door with three other guys, striving to get my license. What a frightening experience it was.

It baffles me these days when I spot a driver's educational vehicle puttering around at 15 miles per hour. Generally I just see the teenager and the teacher inside. What's up with this? We had to learn in groups of four. Maybe this is something that only takes place in small towns of Iowa. Not that I'm really complaining. We four had a blast in drivers education. In fact, I can't imagine going through the entire driving part alone. That has to be a bore. I remember one occasion specifically when we each had to practice backing. It was in the dead of winter and there was a good three feet of snow on the ground. Each of us had to back around a park driveway. It was one of those driveways that loop with a grass area in the center. The only catch was that we could not bump the snow bank that stood on either side of the driveway. This sounds harder than it is. Fortunately for us, we all made it through okay. I was stoked at the end of drivers education to finally receive my license.

Teenagers redundantly assume that a driver's license equals freedom. They love to imagine their life following drivers education. As if they will be able to come and go as they please. Give me a break! It's not like that at all. Maybe when you're 18 or out of the house, but certainly not after getting your license. Nevertheless, look forward to your drivers education and acquiring that handy license to cruise on your own. It can be a fun process if you let it be. Drop the stress and just drive.
