Alcohol Abuse Among College Students Is Serious Stuff
In 1997 a 20 year old Louisiana State University student died from alcohol poisoning while pledging a frat. In the movies alcohol abuse among college students is portrayed as cute, funny, and even highly acceptable. In real life alcohol abuse among college students is one of the biggest problems facing college students and their families each year. In 1993 a study of over 18,000 college students found that nearly 44% of the student surveyed drink excessively just to get drunk. They call it binge drinking and while many college students look at it as a fun way to get very drunk at a party, the reality is that binge drinking can lead to alcohol poisoning and that can lead to death. The Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse has determined that college binge drinking is the single largest addiction on college campuses. Alcohol abuse among college students is not only a serious problem, it is a deadly serious problem.
Far Reaching Effects
A large percentage of college males convicted of date rape were binge drinking immediately prior to the rape taking place. Students are losing their education over binge drinking as a large percentage that binge drink are either regularly placed on academic probation or expelled from school completely. Binge drinking during your college years can also lead to a life long alcohol problem that can cause negative effects for years to come. Alcohol abuse among college students not only affects them while they are students but alcohol abuse among college students can follow them into their adult lives as well.
To many people the problem can be solved with educating the students on the negative effects of alcohol abuse among college students. But binge drinking, and other forms of alcoholism, are such a part of campus life that education needs to be coupled with strict enforcement of local, state, and federal laws regarding alcohol consumption. The legal drinking age in most states is 21 and many college students are in their senior year when they are 21. That means that when you read about that college party where the junior level students got involved in alcohol related incidents then they have done so illegally. Under age drinking is a huge problem on college campuses all over the country and it is contributing to the binge drinking issue that is killing college students every year. Only through a combined effort of education, parental control, and law enforcement can we begin to tackle the issue of alcohol abuse among college students.
