If you’re going to cheat on a term paper, you may as well do it right. Though most educators don’t want to admit it, many of the essays turned into them every year are copied, plagiarized, or written for their students entirely by someone else. Entire websites and companies are based on providing custom term papers for students who are too lazy to write their own papers and who have enough money to buy them instead. These websites are more than happy to sell you a custom term paper for a fee, promising that your paper will be authentic and will snag you a great grade.

Unfortunately for many students, custom term papers aren’t as great as they seem. Many institutions, especially colleges and universities, have sophisticated systems which can track down your pirated essay if it can be found anywhere online, and the systems usually can cross-check them with past student essays from your university, so buying a term paper for your freshman economics class from a senior friend can easily get you into trouble. It can be even worse if your custom term paper isn’t as custom as it seems; many times professors will be able to type a suspicious paragraph from your essay into Google or another popular search engine and navigate straight to a copy of the essay posted online somewhere. Many of the custom term paper sites post snippets of the essays they sell so students can get an idea of what they’re buying, but this is a dead giveaway to any professor or teacher who gets suspicious.

Even if you contract for someone else to write your custom term paper, either via email or a message board, it often isn’t worth the risk. If the style of the essay varies at all from your personal writing style there’s a good chance your professor is going to get suspicious and he or she will probably start asking questions. If you can’t come up with some quick answers about why the style is different or where you found your sources you’re going to be in deep trouble. Though many high schools will be able to forgive some instances of plagiarism, purchasing an entire essay usually merits expulsion, especially in most university programs.

Most students realize that buying a custom term paper isn’t worth getting expelled. If you are pinched for time and won’t be able to finish your term paper in time, go talk to your professor. Most professors will grant some sort of a time extension if you come to them in advance of the essay’s due date, and even if they don’t grant you an extension they’ll look more kindly on a late essay than a stolen one.
