What is Juvenile Diabetes?Diabetes is a very unfortunate illness that affects many people. There are two specific types of diabetes which are type 1 and type 2 diabetes. There are also a few other forms of these types of diabetes, one of which is called gestational diabetes. Type 2 and gestational diabetes are somewhat closely related. They have some of the same causes and some of the same cures and prevention measures. Type 2 and gestational diabetes have much in common as they are somewhat preventable and they are even curable in some cases. However type 1 diabetes is different. Type 1 diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes. Juvenile Diabetes Juvenile diabetes is one of the most difficult forms of diabetes to deal with. This is due to the fact that it is not really preventable, and it is not curable. Juvenile diabetes occurs generally before the age of 20 when the body’s immune system starts to turn on itself and attack the beta cells in the pancreas. There is no exact cause for this known. However, it does seem to have a very strong hereditary factor and doctors theorize that a virus may be involved. Juvenile diabetes seems really to because by several coinciding factors, rather than one definite cause. Juvenile diabetes can be very heartbreaking for the families it affects. This is due mainly to the fact that it can strike when people are so young. Even very young children can become afflicted with juvenile diabetes. The process that occurs when a person comes down with juvenile diabetes starts with the immune system. Generally, when a person eats a meal their body uses the glucose in their blood to absorb the meal’s nutrients. This glucose level is regulated by a person’s pancreas. Generally when a healthy person eats a meal, after they’re full and discontinue eating, their beta cells in the pancreas are notified by their body to discontinue glucose production. The amount of glucose produced by a healthy person’s body is in direct proportion to the size of the meal they just ate. However, in a person that has juvenile diabetes, the immune system attacks the beta cells in the pancreas and they do not function properly. This causes that person to have this entire system of their body out of whack. Signs and symptoms of juvenile diabetes may include extreme thirst, very frequent urination, nausea and abdominal pain, and great hunger even directly after a meal has been consumed.
