The Benefits Of Being A Dental Assistant

Some, but not all dental practices, offer tuition reimbursement which also translates into thousands of dollars for the dental assistant who wishes to pursue higher education. In most cases, the offer of tuition reimbursement is tied directly into the dental healthcare field, which means the dental assistant would need to take courses directly related to that field. Many corporations offer the same benefit. After all, it wouldn’t benefit the dental practice to pay for the education of a dental assistant who then chose to become a veterinarian.

Most dental assistants get yearly vacation and sick time. This certainly adds up in that the employee doesn’t lose money when he or she is sick or wants a few days off. Healthcare coverage is another benefit many dental assistants enjoy and with the cost of healthcare rising today, this benefit alone is worth working for.

Dental assistants generally work a 5-day work week, although some work Saturday mornings, often in exchange for hours off during the week. This is usually a much sought after schedule, especially for those dental assistants who work strictly daytime hours Monday through Friday.

Regardless of all the benefits offered to the dental assistant, this is not a career you enter strictly for the monetary benefits. Almost all dental assistants working today genuinely care about their patients and make excellent employees.

i have to write a senior paper on what i would like to be when i get out of high school. I decided i would like to be a dental assistant. What should i maybe be aware of?

Julie, I am sorry you feel that way, but your statement is so untrue. Maybe this was not the career path for you. I LOVE IT! I like the fast paced aspect of my job. I am moved up since I started from 14 to 19 an hour. I could not be more happy with the career path I have chosen for myself. You would have to be either crazy or lazy to not love being a Dental Assistant!!

Dental Assisting is a dead end job, nothing more than a glorified maid. I have been at it for 12 years and basically I feel very unappreciated, and expected to clean up and put up with everyone else in the clinical staff. For all of you out there considering this as a "career" choice, DON'T DO IT!!
