Dental Assistant
If you’ve been to the dentist before, you’ve probably had contact with the dental assistant. This is the person who, just as the name implies, assists the dentist with the procedures involved during your visit. While women have traditionally held these jobs, men are dental assistants too. Not to be confused with a dental hygienist, a dental assistant works with the dentist passing instruments, taking x-rays, and assisting in such ways as suctioning when the dentist calls for it, and a dental assistant often mixes the materials the dentist uses in dental procedures.
According to the American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA), each state regulates dental assistants and also determines which procedures they can perform.
Dental Assistants must enjoy working with people, be compassionate, and not be squeamish. Making patients feel more comfortable is a big part of the job of a dental assistant. Not surprisingly, many dental patients, regardless of age, are frightened and/or in pain at the time of the dental visit, and an effective dental assistant can go a long way in making the patient’s visit more bearable.
Dental assistants enjoy a wide variety of duties in their professional role alongside the dentist. In addition to working chairside, a dental assistant may also have a role in the business practices of the dental practice. He or she may assist in scheduling, billing, or a wide variety of other duties, depending on the size of the practice. In large practices, the duties of the dental assistant will remain chairside for the most part.
