There are several types of depression, major depression, bipolar and dysthymia. All of these have symptoms, which fall under the definition of depression. There are minor depressive episodes, Bipolar has a close related condition called hypomania, which is similar to depression but sits on the opposite pole. This means that individuals engage in the manic behaviors of Bipolar but do not become depressed or suffer from only extremely minor depressive episodes. If left untreated depression can become a serious illness that can undermine social relationships, career and life in general.
