When I think of a hip flask, the fist thing that pops into my mind is a little old lady taking sips out of a shiny metal container to “take the chill off.” These little containers that are usually filled with spirits are well-known throughout the United States and in other countries. However, Hip Flask is something quite different, so I found.

Hip Flask is not what you think, though. This crime-solving icon of the comic genre is a hippo. Yes a fat, tough-skinned animal that can be found on the African Continent. He is not the first image that pops into mind when you think of the term hip flask, but once you read up on the comic wonder, you will never look at the shiny containers the same way again.

Richard Starkings comic strip is called Hedge Backwards. He writes that it is a comic strip that works on a very personal level for him. Even though Richard Starkings has a tight bond with his creation, he had to put Hedge Backwards on the backburner while trying to build a career. This also put the Hip Flask character on the backburner as well.

It wasn’t until years later that Starkings stumbled upon his Hip Flask character while paging through some of his old comic strip drawings. He immediately knew that the hippo character would be the perfect mascot for his new font design. Yes, the hippo represents a font. However, Hip Flask represents more than that. He is a quality character with quite a bit of depth that anyone can pick out at a glance.

The private eye hippopotamus was chosen out of his genuine appeal to anyone who appreciates comic art. Hip Flask is a smart representation of Starking’s outstanding talent and meticulous care in his work. The character serves as an icon of the perfect comic drawing technique merged with computer-generated fonts. So get out a shiny little container and give Hip Flask a toast.
