The thing that I like best about my criminal profiling career is the number of different things that I get to do. Basically, working on a criminal profile draws from all kinds of different fields. Your goal is a simple one – to figure out who your criminal is, what their motives are, and when they will strike again. Criminal profiling, however, is anything but simple. It draws from forensic psychology, crime scene investigation, handwriting analysis, and good old-fashioned sleuth work. Criminal profilers need to have excellent analytical skills as well as street smarts. They need to be good at interviewing witnesses, and great at seeing beneath the surface.
I did not originally set out to become a criminal profiler. I did not even start out to have a law enforcement career, in fact. Criminal justice was furthest from my mind. I actually began my career as a linguist and translator. The FBI was looking for translators at that point, and I figured it might be an exciting career me. From there, however, things began to change. I formed a friendship with a criminal profiler, and I got to see what he did. I realized that criminal profiling was for me, and I went back to school to get a criminal justice degree. I already had a degree in psychology, so I was really almost set. People hear so much about high profile criminal cases that they do not see the day-to-day realities of criminal profiling. It is not all about catching criminals sex offenders and serial killers. A lot of criminal profiling, in fact, is pretty routine and mundane. Nonetheless, it is one of the most exciting jobs that you can have in law enforcement. You see, criminal profiling is not really used except in very important cases. Typically, if they call in a criminal profiler, you are at least dealing with a major robbery or as con artist. Criminal profilers never have to deal with vandals, petty thieves, or bar fights. Criminal profiling is for serious issues only. That is how I like it! If you are interesting in criminal profiling, you might want to take a course in forensic psychology. Not only will this be an interesting class, telling you a lot about the criminal mind, but it will also let you explore your career options. Criminal profiling is not for everyone, but it can be a rewarding career for a lot of people who haven't even thought about it. You should definitely consider it.
