Common Methods Used to Commit Identity Theft

Criminals commit identity theft to take over someone else’s personal information and get a hold of credit accounts, take out loans, open new accounts, access bank accounts and commit crimes using your personal information. When a criminal commits identity theft under your name, the effects can be life changing because most fraudulent acts involve no physical theft. As a result, many victims do not know that their information and financial accounts are being manipulated until considerable damages have been made.

Thieves commit identity theft by stealing your information using several methods. Some go through your trash searching for credit card and bank account statements, tax information and other documents that include important numbers and personal data. Other criminals commit identity theft by literally stealing your wallet to obtain your I.D., credit cards or social security number.

Be aware that criminals can use different methods to steal your information. Some even pose as your proprietor to have legal authorization for your information, while others change your address to redirect your mails to them. Some thieves commit identity theft using conventional methods, such as acquiring your personal data via unsecured websites online or looking for inside sources in your company to obtain your personal information.

Why Do Other People Commit Identity Theft?

People commit these crimes because of a simple reason – they do not want financial responsibilities and use other people’s names to shop for items, obtain cash and commit crimes under your name to get away easily.

When someone obtains your personal information, he or she can perform different fraudulent things with your data. Some may open credit card accounts under your name while using your social security number and date of birth. After using the new credit card they using to commit identity theft, they will not pay the bills. As a result, it will damage your credit report significantly.

Some victims have reported that someone else have been establishing mobile services under their names, while other victims had someone open a bank account using their names to write bad checks using the account. Criminals can also commit identity theft to buy cars, obtain loans and counterfeit debit cards or checks to drain your finances on your bank account.

Other criminals find creative ways to get away with committing identity theft by pretending to be you when they call your credit card companies and changing your billing address of the account. As a result, the bills will be sent to the updated address, making it impossible for you to check any unusual activities in your account. The worst thing a criminal can do when he commits identity theft is to file for bankruptcy under your name in order to avoid paying for debts he or she accumulated.

Preventing these criminals to commit identity theft is important. Know you rights and learn how to avoid becoming a victim of this vicious crime.
