Some are just clutches which are held by the hand or a small pouch hung from the wrist.   Clutches are usually flat and have limited space. Some have thin straps while others have straps that can be removed for convenience. Pouches are small bags that have more space than clutches since they are tubular in shape with a drawstring at the opening. The drawstrings are sometimes the straps that are hung from the wrist.

Other evening handbag designs are small handbags that can be slung onto one shoulder, small totes that have a single strap to be carried in the hand or up to the elbow and many others. Preference plays a big role in the purchase of an evening handbag. Many women buy a handbag that complements the dress or the shoes they wear for the night.
