Beginner Quilting

I remember, quite clearly, wandering around my grandmother’s house when I was a child, watching one of the most interesting things I had ever seen. I had no idea what a quilting bee was, but my grandmother had one every so often. It was rare that I was there for it, but at this particular time I was. The quilt was in a frame, and everyone was helping to put the final touches on it. It was an interesting thing for a five year old to see. As the years pasted, I began to have an interest in beginner quilting.

I don’t do any quilting today, but I do remember that I enjoyed it very much. My grandmother was happy to teach me about beginner quilting because she thought it was something that we could do together. We did for a while, but we have not had a chance since she had a stroke about twenty years ago. Not matter, because those quilting for beginners lessons that she gave me are some of the best memories from my childhood, and no stroke can take that way from me. She was always patient, and she knew what she was doing, even if she can’t remember how to do it today.

When you want to take up beginner quilting, or you want to teach someone, think about the very basics of what happens when a quilt is put together. One of the first things that my grandmother taught me was how to use a sewing machine. Once I got so that I could do straight lines and learned how to change thread and the bobber, I was good to move on to the next beginner quilting lesson. She got of squares of fabric and showed me how to put them together with the sewing machine, and then how to make up a pattern of my very own.

Most quilts today are not in the regular square shape that you may remember. Some still do this, but there are some other really amazing patterns out there that you can customize with your own colors and fabric patterns. When doing quilting for beginners, however, it might be best to start with the simple squares so that the ins and outs out quilting can be taught easily. After that, someone can learn the most complicated tricks as they go on to make bigger and better quilts. Look for books on beginner quilting if you want to teach yourself. It’s not that hard, and it can be quite a bit of fun as a creative outlet.
