Healthy Mexican Cooking at Home


Mexican cooking is delicious and it is often the food of choice when you need a quick bite on the go as it is highly portable. However healthy eating is not always associated with Mexican cooking, the use of lard and bacon fat in a lot of Mexican dishes makes it unhealthy. If you would like to try your hand at Mexican cooking there are ways for you to make it healthy and still keep the taste that makes it such a popular cuisine. With smart choices and a little tweaking you can have healthy Mexican cooking.

Choosing the Right Dishes

Like all cuisines there are some Mexican dishes that are healthier than others and choosing these dishes is the first step to healthy Mexican cooking. Guacamole is a great dish to make. It has avocados and tomatoes, both healthy vegetables that are great for your skin and helping to reverse the aging process. Use Hass avocados and vine ripened tomatoes to get the best results. Guacamole is usually a dip but you can put it in your tacos, enchiladas and maybe even put it on toast for a quick snack.

Salsa is another great condiment that goes great with a lot of foods, fish in particular. You can make fruit salsas for a sweet contrast to a spicy dish or just regular salsa over pastas. Salsa is a very versatile condiment and can be used with almost everything; you can top eggs with them, scoop it up with chips or put it on top of baked potatoes. The possibilities are endless and the healthy benefits of all those fresh ingredients will make you want to find more ways to incorporate into your daily meals.

Refried beans are popular in Mexican cooking but from the name it would seem that this is not a healthy dish at all. You can make it a healthy dish by omitting lard and bacon grease and using canola oil as the healthiest choice and to get the best taste. Use roasted garlic and sea salt to add to the taste and simmer the beans for as long as you can to improve the taste. Refried beans are great with rice or enchiladas, or even on their own. You can also load up tortilla chips with refried beans for a nice snack. Because you can make a large quantity that keeps well this a great dish for busy moms with active kids.
