Usually, I think that antiques are kind of silly. I do not understand why you would pay extra money for something that is old and used, when you can get something new and made of modern materials for much cheaper. But after I found an antique sterling silver coffee pot in a thrift store downtown, I changed my mind.

I had never seen anything like it before. This antique coffee pot was gorgeous. The silver was, of course, tarnished from years of disuse, but once I polished it up it gleamed like you wouldn't believe. And best of all, it cost almost nothing. Well, maybe almost nothing is an overstatement, but for a sterling silver antique coffee pot, it cost very little.

The fact is, my attitude towards antiques was based on the fact that I'd never owned one before. I was raised in a pretty conservative family, and they taught me the value of money. We had enough to get by, and it was alright to spend cash on things that you really wanted, but it was not alright to spend money on trivialities. An antique coffee pot would have been seen as a shameless waste of money.

I had never realized the kind of pleasure that owning something handmade can give you. Every time I look at the antique coffee pot, I think about who made it and what their life was like. At first, I had no idea when the antique coffee pot was made, but recently I brought it to an appraiser. He told me that it is from over a hundred years ago! Although I only bought it for $20, it is actually worth much more. He was not sure, but he thought that I could get $200 for it easily! Apparently, there is quite a trade in antique coffee pots.

Ever since getting that antique coffee pot, I have begun to redecorate my house. At first, I used to always like to have a very slick, modern look. I started with IKEA when I was in college, and stuck with that aesthetic to the present day. But nowadays, I prefer collectible antiques to all of the modern designs and clean lines that I used to like. After getting that antique coffee pot, I shopped around a little bit and realized how cool antiques could be. Now I have dozens of them all of my house. They are in every nook and cranny.
