Coaching Golf Requires Patience With Players

There are two things needed before anyone considers coaching golf, talent and patience. To become a golf instructor the ability to translate your knowledge and skill of the game into instructions the novice player can understand is the same as teaching any subject. You also have to be able to accept the fact that not everyone learns at the same speed. When coaching golf there will be some hard decisions to make, but they can be relayed to the members of your team in a positive manner.

Recognizing talent as well as the shortcomings in every player’s game is an ability that will come in handy if your are coaching golf. Analyzing a person’s swing and identifying what needs to be done to correct it is only part of the equation. When coaching golf you also need to be able to explain the needs in a positive fashion to prevent the player from becoming discouraged.

Efforts Must Be Geared To Age Of Players

There are opportunities for coaching golf in many levels of players. From the beginning youth teams, through high school and college and into local amateur teams, one important aspect of coaching golf is never attempt to coach a group of players who are well beyond your skill level. If you find the high school players consistently beating you at your own game, moving in to the college ranks with better players can be a mistake.

Before considering coaching golf, contact a professional to analyze your game. While everyone has differences in their swing, you still do not want to instill any bad habits into your team. Understanding that everyone will swing differently can also help you accept that not all players will swing the club like you swing one.

Parental Interaction Can Help Understand Player Concerns

Too many times coaching golf also involves interacting with parents. As most teachers and coaches of other sports have found, parents can be a help or a hindrance in the coaching process. If you go into the process of coaching golf with the mindset that as the coach you are the boss and everyone has to do as you say, you and the team will be a failure.

The whole idea about coaching golf is to bring out the best in every member of the team and not develop a unit that all walks, talks and swings the same way. Every individual is different and recognizing and accepting those differences will make you a better coach and the team better players.
