In many ways, the elements of all American street style have stayed remarkably constant over the years. However much they vary and change, T-shirt and jeans are always the norm – at least among guys. Leather will always look fashionable in an outsider sort of way, and being tough will always make you cool. In almost every other way, however, street fashion has changed drastically. The baggy pants of today would have looked ridiculous to almost anyone of decades past – in fact, they look ridiculous to me and many other people I know still. Urban street style fashions have become much more highly stylized than they have been in decades, with the fashions the kids wear nowadays being oversized and uncomfortable to the point of absurdity. If you want to look cool, you need to be willing to put everything into it, even if that means having to hold up your pants while you walk.
Nonetheless, it is a possible to look fashionable without looking silly. There are many different street fashions all over the world, and sometimes you can freshen things up and actually come across as cooler by adopting a foreign style. For example, Japanese street fashion is much different than American. Paris street fashion is much more classic, bringing a quintessentially European, cultured look to downtown. If you want to be fashionable, you might as will go all the way. Don't just dress like your friends, dress cooler than your friends. I even know a friend who wears Sesame Street clothing instead of street wear clothing. Almost all of his clothing is from kids shows that he used to watch, including his Big Bird shirts, his Danger Mouse hat, and his Inspector Gadget boxers. All of his friends wear street wear clothing, and he definitely stands out, but people think he is cool because of it. His rejection of street fashion doesn't make him an outcast. Instead, it labels him as someone who is independent enough to stand up on their own, scoffing at the conventions popular in his area. Before you go out and buy the latest street fashions, give it another look. You won't stand out for wearing the same thing as everyone else does, even if you are a flawless dresser. Instead of buying clothes that emphasize how you're the same as other people, why not wear ones that emphasize your differences. I guarantee that you will be a sharper dresser and a more popular person for it.
