tools of the trade
Most professions have their own set of tools of the trade. A chef has their kitchen tools, and a hair dresser has everything they need to both cut and style any head of hair. Some have fewer tools, but most have something that they need to have. As a construction worker, my husband has many different things that he has to have, but luckily, he has most of it provided for him. My stepfather, who was a mechanic for a long time, did not have that luxury. The tools of the trade that my stepfather needed numbered in the hundreds. Though the bigger tools were always provided for him, he had to buy everything else on his own. He needed a very large tool chest that is about the size of a refrigerator in order to keep them all together and to keep them organized. These tools of the trade were not cheap either, and he spent a lot of time paying for them.
My mom was not thrilled that he had to spend thousands on his tools of the trade, but she knew he had to do it. Luckily, there was a company that allowed him to buy them, and then make a payment each week on payday. They would show up at his work to collect and to see if there was anything else that he needed. This made it very easy for him to pay each week without messing around with writing checks, and if he needed something, he knew we could get a quality item within a week. He ended up with quite a collection, and even though he is no longer a mechanic, he certainly finds uses for them still to this day.
No matter what your trade or occupation, remember that when you buy tools of the trade for your job, they are quite often tax deductions. You should keep receipts of everything you have to buy for your job and then give that information to the person doing your taxes. Though you won’t get that money back in the way you might hope, that is money you will not be taxed for. Just don’t get carried away and claim personal things, or you could get into a lot of trouble. If you work from home, remember that some utility and office expenses are deductible as well, but make sure you know the rules before you claim them.
