When looking for someone who will write a knowledgeable and accurate letter for you, make sure it is someone who knows about your work ethics and abilities. Perhaps a former boss or co-worker would be best for something of this nature. You want someone who can describe your strengths in detail. You may want to ask a potential candidate if they would feel comfortable writing you a letter of recommendation. Some people shy away from things like that and would rather have the option of declining. You should give them an updated copy of your resume and detailed information on any ongoing or new skills you have learned recently. Once they have a bit of factual information in front of them, writing a letter of recommendation may be a great deal easier.

Ideally, a letter of recommendation should describe the person’s work ethics and conduct, accomplishments, abilities and successes. Of course, any additional information is always helpful but might not be useful. A potential employer doesn’t need to know that you helped the company’s softball team win the division title. They want to know that you worked incredibly hard and were successful in your last position.

If there isn’t anyone that you want to use from a prior place of employment as a reference or to write you a positive letter of recommendation, choose someone else cautiously. Try to find an upstanding citizen in your community. A church pastor or clergyman, business associate, client or customer or even a former teacher might make an excellent reference for you. Choose wisely – they may be helping to determine your future. Of course, you could always forego the letters of recommendation and hope for the best. It all depends on how badly you want to make a change.
