Have you ever imagined that a discreet department of your company could actually become a business in its own right? I’m not even talking about any of the core products or services you provide. Remember I said discreet? Well, it would surprise you to know that those silent and often swamped bean counters who reside in your accounting department can actually sustain an accounting business by themselves?
This is a surprise to most people because they have always considered accounting to be a cost center than a revenue generating business. But the accounting business is not a new development. In fact, if you take a close look at several of the top consultancy businesses, you will find an accounting business at the core of their offerings. But there is a whole lot more to a traditional accounting business than meets the eye. For instance, each new monitoring guideline that governments worldwide impose on companies and their accounting is fodder for an accounting business. It is no surprise therefore to discover that after the implementation of the Sarbanes Oxley guidelines became mandatory in the US, the income generated by the accounting business soared. And it was only expected. After all, who was better placed and better equipped to deal with the guidelines offered by SOX than an accounting business. Thriving as they do on figures and reporting structures, the accounting businesses took to these guidelines like a fish to water.
But it is not just the big corporations who depend on an accounting business in order to set their records straight. Several smaller firms too make use of an accounting business due to a variety or reasons. In some cases they may be too small to be able to hire a full time accounting professional, but their figures might be good enough to warrant the outsourced service of an accounting business. In other cases, an accounting business could provide bulk services to say a traders association. Both parties benefit from the relationship and the accounting business gets bulk clients who can be spun off as distinct clients once their businesses pick up and thrive.
But the one thing that is probably the best part of running an accounting business is that they don’t come with the inherent capital expenditures associated with conventional businesses. After all, accountants use their knowledge and acumen to streamline the money matters of others, so it is only fair to assume that they would apply these very strategies to their own business.
