Broadway is the most famous theatre district in the world and productions here attract the most attention. Everyone wants a hit in this part of Manhattan and reputations are made and broken here. Musicals tend to have the longest runs and are immensely popular but New York City Broadway plays are also in demand. They are a terrific showcase for directors, actors and playwrights.
There is something for everyone, from re-workings of the classics to premieres of new productions. New York City Broadway plays bring both comedy and drama and often result in many Tony Awards. There are currently a variety of productions waiting to open, to wet the appetite. A revival of Pygmalion opens in October 2007 at the American Airlines Theatre. The story, by George Bernard Shaw, was famously presented as a musical in the movie, My Fair Lady. Claire Danes, in her Broadway debut, plays the lead of Eliza Doolittle and Jefferson Mays is Henry Higgins. This production is from the Roundabout Theatre Company and is a limited engagement. It's a delightful and witty story of the transformation of Eliza from a flower seller to a lady of high society.
In contrast, the Cort Theatre is presenting a gritty drama by renowned writer Harold Pinter. It's a production of The Homecoming and is scheduled to run from December 9th 2007 until April 13th 2008. Ian McShane, best known for the HBO series, Deadwood, takes the lead role of Teddy. Written and set in the 1960s, the story is about the tensions within a working class family from London. It's one of the New York City Broadway plays that are being revived and it also stars Raul Esparza, previously seen in the Rocky Horror Show and Sondheim musicals.
Shakespeare is no stranger to the Broadway stage. Many of his plays have been produced as New York City Broadway plays with several memorable performances. The Vivian Beaumont Theatre at the Lincoln Center hope to make an impression with Cymbeline, opening on December 2nd 2007 until January 6th 2008. The play is set in Great Britain and Italy and is romantic, tragic and comic in turns. The main characters are played by John Cullum as the King, Phylicia Rashad as the evil Queen, Jonathan Cake as the villain and Martha Plimpton as the King's daughter and heroine of the piece. This is a good opportunity to see one of Shakespeare's lesser known plays and it will enhance the reputation of New York City Broadway plays around the world.
