Academy Award Winners

The award season for the movie industry is always eagerly awaited by the industry itself and by the film going public. The most prestigious and extravagantly presented of the awards are the Oscars. Academy Award winners, whether rewarded for their work in front of or behind the cameras, gain recognition and boost their careers as a result. An award for a film or even a nomination can increase its revenue a great deal and studios lobby for the all-important nominations. Actors, actresses and directors so rewarded can look forward to job offers rolling in.

The first Oscar ceremony was performed in 1929 and the latest one took place in February 2008 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Jon Stewart. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences present the gold plated statuettes. The first televised ceremony was in 1953 and it has moved around various venues. The Kodak Theatre has been its permanent home since 2002.

Many films that have gone on to be regarded as classics and stood the test of time have won the coveted Best Picture award. These Academy Awards winners include Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, On the Waterfront, Lawrence of Arabia, The Sting, Gandhi, and Silence of the Lambs. This list shows the diversity of films to win. They are more often dramas, rather than comedy. The latest winning film was No Country for Old Men, directed by the Coen Brothers. The films to win the most awards in total, with eleven each, are Ben-Hur in 1959, Titanic in 1997, and The Return of the King in 2003.

Several directors of huge reputation have won in their category. The maker of epic westerns, John Ford has received the most directing awards with four to his credit. William Wyler has been nominated the most times. Other directors to win over the decades include King Vidor, Alfred Hitchcock, Francis Ford Coppola, Roman Polanski, and George Lucas. Academy Award winners in the Best Actor category to receive the most statuettes are Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper, Marlon Brando, and Tom Hanks. In the Best Actress category, Katherine Hepburn leads the way with four awards. Others to win include Bette Davis, Vivian Leigh, Joan Crawford, Julie Christie, and Meryl Streep.

Other categories include Cinematography, Editing, Original Score, Costume Design, Make U, and Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy also presents Honorary Awards from time to time for outstanding contributions to cinema. Academy Award winners in this category include Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, Noel Coward, Bob Hope, and Gene Kelly.
