There are times when mud flaps are needed on anything that moves, and there are other times when they are just decoration. Sometimes, they can be both. There are some out there made just for their intended use, and others that are meant to be funny and to add a bit of personality to a car or truck. You will find the decorative ones on many pick up type trucks, but even then they do serve a good purpose.

If you have ever ridden a bike that did not have the guard over the tires, you can understand why mud flaps are so important on some vehicles. You obviously can’t have them on bikes, but if you are missing the guard, you will end up with a line of mud and dirt going up the back of you. Mud flaps on cars and trucks do pretty much the same thing, though you don’t have to worry about your clothes as much as you do your vehicle. They keep your vehicle clean, and if you have to push your car or truck out of the ditch, they will protect your clothing, if only a little bit.

A vehicle that is higher off the ground can always use a good set of mud flaps. This not only keeps dirt and mud from the bottom of the vehicle, it can also stop any rocks or small stones that might be kicked up by the tires. The stone will hit the flap and fall rather than flying out to hit the car or truck that might be behind you on the road. When it snows, mud flaps also keep any snow and ice from flying around - and we know that gravel is used on roads to aid in traction - and that saves your undercarriage from damage as well as everyone else on the road.

Some vehicles come with mud flaps. You probably have some on your car or truck and never noticed. However, if you don’t have any, you can go out and get some, as long as you know how to put them on correctly. Some are very simple, and might have the name of your car manufacturer on them. Others come with various designs and pictures, and you can usually find something to match your personality if you look hard enough. If you can’t find something to suit your taste in mud flaps locally, look online for some very interesting sets.
