Fortune Teller

During my senior week, my best friend and I were walking down the boardwalk at the beach, and saw a sign for a fortune teller. Joking around, we decided that we'd see what this was all about. I had never been to a fortune teller before and wasn't even quite sure I believed in them. All I had ever heard were bad things about that topic. But, we entered her candlelit shop suppressing our curious and nervous giggles. From behind a curtain, the fortune teller appeared in front of us. It was almost a scene out of an eerie movie. She was wearing the type of outfit that we expected her to be and I suddenly had the urge to leave. My friend told her that we wanted to have our palms read and the mysterious fortune teller directed us to sit down.

My friend offered her palm first and I listened to the predictions with skepticism. It seemed to me that everything she was saying was generic and anyone with some creativity could create. She then told her that she would marry someone tall and thin with blonde hair and they would have two children. When the fortune teller took my palm and held it, I was anxious to hear what she had to say. She said many generic things to me as well, while I just nodded the entire time. Then she told me that I would marry a dark skinned man and would only be able to have one child. After those two comments, I was ready to leave. A dark skinned man? My father, having grown up in the south, would skin me alive. And only one child in my future? I was convinced this fortune teller was a complete phony.

Years went by and I lost touch with that same friend. That experience was forgotten. I met and fell in love with a wonderful man on my 26th birthday. He was everything I had ever wanted in a partner and we were soon inseparable. My father was not thrilled with him at first simply because he was Hispanic. However, my husband quickly won him over and my father was proud to walk me down the aisle on our wedding day. A year later, we were expecting our first child. My pregnancy was full of complications and I ended up having an emergency C-section. Our daughter was perfect in every way. We tried for three more years to get pregnant before giving up. At my last high school reunion, I hugged my forgotten friend and starting talking happily. I introduced her to my husband and she gasped. "He has dark skin!" she exclaimed. At that moment, I remembered our fortune teller experience. She summoned her husband to join us and it was my turn to gasp. He had blonde hair and was tall. I only had one child. She was pregnant
with her second child. Maybe the fortune teller wasn't a phony afterall. Or, perhaps it was mere coincidence.
