Use the Right Essential Oil Bottles

The color of your essential oil bottles is a very important factor, as the right colored bottles will help to protect your essential oils from deterioration. Traditionally essential oil bottles were amber in color and some people will tell you that this is the way to go with essential oils.

Recently there has been a trend towards dark blues and greens, and sometimes even violet bottles. You should never buy essential oils in clear bottles or store them in clear bottles. The dark color of your essential oil bottles will help to filter ultra violet rays and preserve your essential oil.

Storage Area

Sunlight is very bad for essential oils and he less they are exposed to sunlight the better. Essential oil bottles should be kept in a cool, dark place. You can even keep your essential oil bottles in the refrigerator. Citrus oils are best kept in the refrigerator, as they are most prone to deterioration through exposure to sunlight.

Some essential oils may solidify when stored below room temperature but this is nothing to worry about. Some of the oils that will do this are Aniseed, Star Anise, Rose Otto and Fennel; simply let these essential oils stand at room temperature before you want to use them and they should return to liquid form. You can also warm them up by rolling them between you palms.

Beware: Danger

Essential oil bottles should never be exposed to heat or a direct flame. This is because essential oils are extremely flammable. Exposing essential oil bottles to candles, cookers or any type of naked flame could lead to an unfortunate accident. You should also never put unadulterated essential oils into plastic containers. Pure essential oils can melt plastic, however when mixed with a carrier oil this is not a danger.
