Every generation, advertising gets more and more sophisticated. This isn't because of the ceaseless creativity of advertisers so much as because of necessity. Of course, promotional ideas have as much to do with how we present the product as what product we give away. One of the most interesting promotional ideas I've seen recently is something that is done by liquor and tobacco companies in bars. They'll contract with the bar to hold drawings and give away free presents on a particular day. They get attractive spokespeople to hold the contest. They simply hang out there and help people have a good time on a Saturday night. In the process, they introduce the product to consumers who might not be using it. More importantly, they associate the product with cutting loose and enjoying the evening.

Then again, a promotional idea doesn't have to involve such a novel setting. Sometimes, giving any useful products in a very specialized environment and in a very professional manner is the best way to approach it. Handing out samples of software at industry conventions, For example, is a great way to get people to try out your product. If it is done in a No-frills fashion, it shows everyone that you have supreme confidence in the product you are selling. This encourages clients to really give it a chance.
