As the popularity of the Blue Man Group shows increased, their performances evolved and included the development of a set of custom musical instruments. Many of these instruments were crafted and designed based upon the observation that ordinary materials, such as PVC piping, make and interesting noise when struck by a variety of objects. The use of common materials to craft unusual and distinctive instruments is to a large degree what makes the sounds of The Blue Man Group so unique.

One of the custom musical instruments used to make the distinctively enticing sounds from The Blue Man Group come alive is actually called the PVC. The PVC is an instrument made out of white 2” PVC pipe. The pipes are cut to specific lengths and The Blue Man Group members will each play the instrument by striking one of the open ends of the pipe with a foam rubber paddle. During live performances, three different types of PVC instruments are used. There is one each for low, mid, and high octaves. This instrument also comes in a portable backpack version which can be further enhanced with confetti and streamer shooters! The ‘floor’ PVC units are typically covered with paint that is not visible under normal lighting conditions but can be seen in visibly different colors under ultraviolet light. The lighting is adjusted throughout the show to create visual effects that include the PVC appearing to change from white to colorful.

The intriguing and unique sounds of The Blue Man Group can now be explored by experienced and budding young musicians at home. The Blue Man Group has released two different musical instruments for children, based on existing Blue Man musical creations.
