Who Would Need for a Rehabilitation Specialist?

There are hundreds of diseases out there, which disable the body to such an extent that the person cannot live without outside assistance. Each type of disease would require a specific method of rehabilitation and hence, no rehabilitation specialist can be used for all diseases. For example, a rehabilitation specialist for cancer would be different from a rehabilitation specialist looking after spinal cord injury and so on.

Physiatrist

The rehabilitation specialist is also called a Physiatrist in medical language and to qualify as one, it takes the same amount of study time and course as that of a doctor. After completion of medical school, the rehabilitation specialist would be required to go through at least three years of internship or hands-on training. On successful completion, there will be another two years in which they specialize in a certain area.

The people who hire a rehabilitation specialist would want some highly specialized skills besides their ability to make things work. Many are required not only to work along with the client to regain their mental and physical strength, but also help the client get into regular employment by making him/her competent enough to function on his/her own. A rehab specialist, besides functioning as a doctor and nurse rolled into one, is also your mentor and advisor.

Often, the role of rehabilitation specialist extends to building or re-building the lost skills with special emphasis on job related habits and behavior, for improving their chances to work and earn their livelihood (preferably in the same area they were working before). However, if that is not possible, at least they should be able to take up another job where they could earn a decent salary and get engaged in work that bears some relation to the profession they had worked in before the incapacitation.

Overall, a rehabilitation specialist is a highly dedicated expert whose main endeavor is to bring back to the mainstream the person who they take under their wing. This is mostly a one-to-one interaction, which requires a lot of involvement, patience and specialized multi-faceted care.
