The anticipation, eating of and availability of food are aspects about which a food addict will obsess. Other concerns about food that are obsessed about include the amount of food eaten, serving sizes, body weight and image. The food addict may not even realize they are obsessing about food although the people around the person may recognize that something is not right, if they do not recognize the symptoms of food addiction.

The earlier that the symptoms of food addiction are recognized will make it easier to treat the addiction. This is because the more deeply a person’s obsession grows; the more difficult it is to shake the person free of their obsession.

There are early warning signs that give clues about a food obsession. These symptoms can include a love-hate relationship with food, food being connected to the person’s deep feelings, overeating or under eating and body image.

Love – Hate Relationship With Food

When a person has a love-hate relationship with food they may think about food constantly, use food as a comfort food, choose one food for pleasure and which is eaten too often, craving for a food and when in the presence of the food, the craving is so strong that the person is unable to avoid the food.

Other symptoms of a love-hate relationship with food include an out of control or over controlled relationship with food, viewing food as dangerous or to be avoided, rituals with food, eating in secret, lying about food intake and not wanting to eat in public.

The Amount Of Food Eaten Is A Problem

People who are addicted to food have a problem with eating food including guilt about overeating, do not like being hungry, overeating, under eating, binging, eating that turns into a binge, eating all the food on their plate even if they are full, overeating if there is food available, eating until sickened, eating quickly so they can eat more food and binging on food after trying to reduce calories or dieting.

Deep Feelings And Food

People with a food addiction have deep feelings about food including eating when anxious, eating more because of the anxious feelings, uses food to relieve negative feelings and hiding food so they can eat in secret. As well, a food-addicted person may be withdrawn, have trouble handling stress, have mood swings and be depressed and irritable.

Skewed Body Image

Food addictions also can make a person obsess about body size, shape and weight and the food-addicted person can have a skewed view of their body with an intense fear of being fat. The symptoms of a food addiction can wreak havoc on a person ability to stay healthy.

Food addiction and the symptoms can have a serious affect on the quality of life of the addicted person. Unless the food addiction is recognized, a person’s health can be at stake.
