Chemical dependency treatment centers are absolutely the only way for someone with a bad addiction to detox and hopefully overcome their addiction. I should know what I am talking about in this case. I suffered from an alcohol addiction for 11 years before I got into a 12 step program. I have had many friends with drug and alcohol problems and they have all told me the same things: If you do not get into a chemical dependency treatment center, your problems will only continue to grow until they completely overwhelm your ability to deal with them, and that is no joke.
Of course, not all chemical dependency treatment centers are quite the same. Some of the chemical dependency treatment centers really stress the importance of religion to help you to overcome addiction, while others of them take a more clinical approach. I actually really prefer the latter to the former. As an atheist, I do not believe that chemical dependency treatment centers necessarily need to impose god on you as a way to cure what ails you. Many 12 step programs think that this is the end all and be all of treatment. They believe that until you admit the existence of a higher power, you will continue to be plagued by addictions forever, but I think that this is a bunch of hogwash. Of course, getting into chemical dependency treatment centers in the first place can be a real problem, and that is no joke. The fact is that it can be, and often is a really huge challenge to get someone to admit that they have a problem in the first place. Even if you are convinced to try chemical dependency treatment centers, you can not really succeed in them if you do not want to be there deep down inside. You might be in and out of chemical dependency treatment centers of various sorts for years and years before you ever find a solution to any of your problems, and that can be a real shame. You only get to live once as far as we know, and the cycle of addiction can really lead you to squander this really precious gift that we call life. No one should ever do that, because the high that you get, no matter how good it might seem at the time, is simply not worth it in the end.
