12 Step Programs

For a long time it seemed that anything that was wrong with you was fixable via 12 step programs. As far as I can remember, this type of program was first used to help alcoholics, but it seemed that everyone jumped on to the bandwagon after that. There was a program like this for just about every problem you could imagine, and many that you couldn’t. It became so bad that jokes were made, and people began to stop taking the process so seriously.

The reason that 12 step programs were copied so many times was because they work. They aren’t perfect, and they don’t work for everyone, but they seemed to work better than any other type of program that had come along at that point in time. 12 step programs don’t always work for all people, but they seemed to reach some people that had been considered hopeless up until that point. I guess the theory was that what works for one thing might work for others.

12 step programs are still around, though they are not as common as they once were. As far as I know, those in AA can still go through the program, and it has helped many people overcome their drinking issues, at least for a little while. 12 step programs were designed to help someone work though why they were acting out. Rather than telling someone to stop drinking, they helped a person think about why they were drinking, and what they could do to make life livable without the crutch.

If you need help with anything, you can still find 12 step programs around. If you know someone going through this, be patient with them and know that they are trying to do something to make their life better. Not all 12 step programs work for all people, and you may have to find something else or someone else to help you if you seem to be failing. The point is to never give up, and to face the problems you have been trying to avoid. It is true that you can’t fix anything until you admit that it is a problem. If someone you love has taken that first step, offer them all the support you can give. Life is different for everyone, and everyone has a different way of coping. If someone has chosen a dangerous path, help them any way you can, and remember, it won’t be easy for anyone.
