Baby Acne: Have You Wondered Why Your Child Gets It?

Acne is actually something that affects people of any age, so it can be found even in older people too. Acne is the number one skin problem among everyone, but usually it is not very harmful compared to other skin diseases. Baby acne has many causes just like adult acne, but most of the times it is caused by the baby’s body hormonal changes, just like how it happens in teenagers.

Hormonal Changes

You might wonder what kind of hormonal changes may occur in an infant’s body. Well, it is very simple. During the birth, the baby gets separated from its mothers body and it starts living on it’s own for the first time. Supply of hormones will come into the body through the mother’s milk at the same time the body is trying to live on its own.

More common among boys, this baby acne occurs at around 2 to 3 weeks after birth, and in most cases lasts up to 6 months or more. Unlike adult acne, baby acne is not just limited to oily parts, but almost everywhere, including forehead, cheeks, chin, and sometimes on the abdomen, bottom, thighs, and back. The baby acne looks slightly different from adult acne, in the sense of the looks of it. It comes as small white spots on the skin rather than big volcano like rashes. In certain serious cases, it may appear as red bumps just like adult acne.

Is It Very Bad?

Many parents get so worried when their baby gets baby acne, without actually knowing that the acne is much similar to what adults get, and it is harmless. Rarely baby acne requires any medical treatment, except for some skin care creams and moisturizer. Unlike adult acne, which can grow extremely big and become infectious, baby acne usually goes off in matter of weeks.

Doctors always advice not to rush when the acne comes, meaning to say do not simply go and get some unknown skin care medications or those used for adults. Your baby’s skin is very sensitive, and usually does not accept adult medications or creams, which when applied will lead to more problems.
